How to Fix a Phone Speaker — The Complete Guide

By the Phone Speaker Cleaner Team • October 2026 • Simple steps, honest advice

Almost every phone speaker problem sounds catastrophic and turns out simple. This page is the map for all of them: find your symptom below, follow its trail, and only climb to the next step when the simpler one fails. No circles, no guessing — and repair shops stay where they belong: at the very end of the road, not the beginning.

Fix it now — the free tool takes about a minute.

Start here: name your symptom

A fix that ignores the symptom is just luck. Match yours first — each trail below leads to its own detailed guide on this site:

  1. Muffled or underwater sound → water or dust in the grille. Start with the water and dust trails below.
  2. Crackling, buzzing or popping → the crackling trail: usually dust, moisture, or volume at its limit.
  3. Everything just quieter than it used to be → the volume trail: settings first, then cleaning.
  4. Completely silent → the not-working trail: settings and software first, hardware last.
  5. Fine on music, muffled on calls → that is the earpiece, and it has its own gentle trail.

The 10-minute fix ladder

Whatever your symptom, this ladder comes first. It fixes the majority of speakers we meet, and every rung is free:

  1. Restart the phone. Audio software gets stuck more often than speakers break.
  2. Check the settings quartet: volume up, mono audio off, balance centred, equaliser flat.
  3. Run the Speaker Test tones and note exactly what sounds wrong — and what sounds fine.
  4. Clean: Dust Clean for the dry and dusty story, Water Eject if the phone has been wet. Speaker facing down.
  5. Test the same tones again at the same volume. Better means dirt. Identical — with buzzing even when quiet — points to damage.

The water trail

If the phone has been swimming, start with our fell-in-water guide — the first ten minutes matter more than any tool. The short version: out of the water, tap it dry speaker-down, case and SIM tray out, no charging while it warns you about liquid, then Water Eject cycles and patience. Water trapped in the charging port has its own guide too — that 'liquid detected' message is a protection, not an error. Given a day of honest drying, most water speakers come back fully.

The damage question

Here is the honest dividing line this whole guide respects: cleaning fixes dirt, water and settings. It does not fix torn hardware, and any site that promises otherwise is selling you something. The signs of real damage are specific — buzzing at every volume even after a clean, silence that survives every setting, trouble that began with a hard drop. Our damage-test guide walks the full check. If it is damage: warranty first if you have it, a quoted repair second, and no more full-volume experiments in between.

Keep it from coming back

Speakers clog slowly, which means they can be kept clean cheaply. A gentle dust cycle once a month undoes what pockets do daily. Notice your case: some designs wrap the speaker cut-out like a muffler — if calls improved the day you changed cases, you already know. Keep the phone out of steamy bathrooms when you can (steam is just water with patience), and after beach days, treat sand like the enemy it is — one soft brush, one dust cycle, done. Small habits, loud speaker.
