Phone Speaker Muffled? Here's How to Fix It
A muffled speaker almost always has one of three causes: water in the grille, dust in the grille, or a setting on the phone. Here is how to tell them apart in one minute — and the fix for each.
Fix it now — the free tool takes about a minute.
Open the Speaker CleanerStep 1: Which cause is yours?
- Wet recently (rain, splash, shower steam)? It is probably water — go to Step 2.
- Never wet, but sound got worse slowly over months? It is probably dust — go to Step 3.
- Sound changed suddenly after an update or a new case/screen guard? Check Step 4 first.
Step 2: Water fix
Hold the phone speaker-down and run the Water Eject tool (full volume). Droplets should jump out. Wipe, wait 5 minutes, and test with music. Repeat up to 3 times.
Step 3: Dust fix
Run the Dust Clean tool — its rising sweep loosens lint from the grille. Afterwards, brush the grille very gently with a soft, dry toothbrush, speaker facing down so the dust falls out, not in.
Step 4: The setting checks
Turn off silent mode and check media volume (call volume and media volume are different). Take the case off — a badly fitted case can cover the speaker. Turn Bluetooth off for a test: your sound may be going to earbuds in another room. Still muffled after all this and both cleans? The speaker itself may be damaged — that needs a repair shop.
Ready? Clean your speaker now.
