Phone Speaker Not Working? Check These 7 Things First

By the Phone Speaker Cleaner Team • October 2026 • Simple steps, honest advice

Total silence feels like a dead speaker. Most of the time it is not dead at all. Work through these 7 checks in order — they take five minutes and fix the large majority of 'broken' speakers.

Fix it now — the free tool takes about a minute.

The 7 checks

  1. Volume and silent mode: raise MEDIA volume while a song plays (not during a call), and flip the silent switch off.
  2. Bluetooth: turn it off for a minute. Your phone may be playing sound to earbuds or a car you are not near.
  3. Headphone mode stuck? If the phone thinks headphones are plugged in, the speaker stays silent. Restart the phone — this clears it.
  4. Do Not Disturb / Focus modes can mute media on some phones. Turn them off and test again.
  5. Case and screen guard: remove them and test. A guard fitted over the earpiece kills call sound.
  6. Water or dust: run the Speaker Test on this site, then the Water Eject and Dust Clean tools. A blocked grille can sound like total failure on quiet content.
  7. Restart, then update: a plain restart fixes more audio bugs than any other step. If an update is waiting, install it.

When it really is broken

If one speaker plays and the other is silent on every test, or the sound crackles at all volumes even after cleaning, the speaker hardware is likely damaged. That is a repair-shop job — and now you can tell them exactly what you already tested.

Ready? Clean your speaker now.
