Why Is My Phone Speaker Crackling? Causes & Fixes

By the Phone Speaker Cleaner Team • October 2026 • Simple steps, honest advice

It starts with your favourite song. Then a podcast. That dry, fizzy crackle riding on top of the sound — like a tiny packet of crisps being opened inside your phone. Before you assume the worst: crackling is a symptom, not a sentence. Most of the time the cause is something small, sitting in or on the speaker — and fixable in minutes.

What that crackling actually is

A phone speaker makes sound by moving a tiny membrane back and forth, thousands of times a second. Crackling is what you hear when that movement gets interrupted — something is in the way, the signal is messy, or the membrane itself is struggling. That is why the same crackle can come from dust, from water, from a software setting, or — least often — from real damage. The trick is not to guess. The trick is to narrow it down, simplest cause first.

The 6 usual causes — simplest first

Work down this list in order. In our experience the first three explain most crackling phones, and all three are free to fix.

  1. Dust and pocket lint packed into the speaker grille — the membrane is literally pushing against dirt.
  2. Moisture still inside the speaker after rain, a spill or a steamy bathroom — water crackles as it moves.
  3. Volume pinned at 100%. Small speakers distort at their limit; a little crackle only at full blast can be completely normal.
  4. A loose crumb or grain of sand sitting on the grille, dancing every time the bass hits.
  5. An equaliser, 'bass boost' or a glitchy Bluetooth connection bending the signal before it reaches the speaker.
  6. A torn or worn-out speaker — real damage. Common after a hard drop, and the only cause on this list that cleaning cannot cure.

Find YOUR cause in 3 minutes

Open our Speaker Test page and run two checks: the DISTORTION tone and the VOLUME RAMP. Then match what you hear to the pattern below — this is the same logic a repair shop starts with, minus the bill.

  1. Crackle only at high volume, clean when quiet → dust, lint or the speaker's natural limit. Cleaning territory.
  2. Crackle at every volume, even soft ones → suspect damage. Our damage-test guide walks you through confirming it.
  3. Crackle in one app but not others → the app or its equaliser, not the speaker. Turn the EQ off and compare.
  4. Crackle started after the phone got wet → moisture. Skip ahead to the water fix below.

Fix it — in the right order

Do these in order, and re-test with the same song after each step. The moment the crackle goes, stop — you have found your cause and your cure in one move.

  1. Run one Dust Clean cycle below, phone face-down. This clears causes 1 and 4 — the most common pair.
  2. If the phone got wet recently, run Water Eject instead (or as well). Then give it 10 minutes before judging.
  3. Drop the volume to about 85% and play the same song. Gone? Your speaker was simply at its limit — no fault at all.
  4. Turn off any equaliser or sound effects, restart the phone, and try a different song or app to rule out a bad file.

When crackling means damage

If the crackle survives a proper clean, laughs at every volume, and the phone took a knock before it started — that is a hardware story, and no sound file or app will rewrite it. A repair shop can confirm in minutes; if the phone is under warranty, the brand's service centre is your first stop. One warning from the heart: do not keep forcing a torn speaker at full volume 'to clear it'. You would not rev a car engine with a hole in it — same idea, smaller machine.
