No Sound on Your Windows PC? 8 Checks in Order

By the Phone Speaker Cleaner Team • October 2026 • Simple steps, honest advice

One moment a video is playing, the next your PC is showing a silent film. Do not start reinstalling things at random — Windows sound problems follow patterns, and the cause is usually one wrong setting sitting quietly between you and your speakers. Work down this list in order; most people find their sound by check three.

Fix it now — the free tool takes about a minute.

The 30-second checks everyone skips

Yes, these sound obvious. They also solve an embarrassing share of 'broken' PCs — including, once, the writer's own:

  1. The physical mute: laptop keyboards have a mute key that gets pressed by accident, cats and toddlers. Check for an amber light near the function keys.
  2. Click the speaker icon near the clock. Is the output set to your speakers — or did it jump to your monitor, a TV, or a Bluetooth device you used yesterday?
  3. Plug in headphones. Sound in the headphones means Windows is fine and the trail leads to the speakers themselves.

Windows' favourite hiding places

Still silent? Windows keeps a few more volume controls where nobody thinks to look:

  1. Volume Mixer: right-click the speaker icon and open it. Individual apps have their own sliders there — one app muted to zero looks exactly like a dead PC.
  2. Sound settings: confirm the output device once more, and turn OFF 'audio enhancements' — a broken enhancement can mute what it was meant to improve.
  3. Run the built-in troubleshooter (Settings → System → Sound → Troubleshoot). It is genuinely good at the common faults: stopped services, wrong defaults, driver hiccups.

The driver fix for stubborn cases

Drivers are the software that introduces Windows to your sound hardware, and they occasionally wake up confused — usually right after an update. Open Device Manager, find your audio device under 'Sound, video and game controllers', and try Update driver. If the silence started right after a Windows update, Roll Back Driver is the smarter button. Restart afterwards either way; audio drivers are famous for needing the reboot to finish the thought.

Still silent? Dust is a suspect too

If yours is a laptop, remember its speakers breathe through small grilles just like a phone's — and they collect the same dust, crumbs and desk grit, especially on machines that live in kitchens and workshops. Sound normal in headphones but thin and quiet from the laptop's own speakers is the classic tell. Our Laptop Speaker Cleaner page runs the same sound-cleaning idea made for laptops, and a soft brush over the grilles finishes the job.

When it's hardware

No sound from speakers or headphones, the troubleshooter shrugs, and the drivers are healthy: that points inside the machine. On a desktop, check the rear audio jacks are in the right sockets (the green one — it matters). Beyond that, a repair shop can test the audio hardware in minutes. Ask for the diagnosis price first; on older laptops, a small USB or Bluetooth speaker is sometimes the honest, cheaper ending.

Ready? Clean your speaker now.
